AUSTRIA:  November 2020
RHI Magnesita, Trieben
(Gauge: 900mm)
The factory at Trieben is one of the smaller, non-profitable RHI Magnesita sites in Austria, and the location had been under discussion for many years due to it's non-profitable status. Two years ago it was timetabled for closure, and this October it is reported that production has finally been ceased. In the press the closures are described as temporary closures, but it seems highly unlikely it would reopen.

the internal narrow gauge railway was very simple short line with just 3 sidings. The photo below was taken in the factory in 2004 with the new Schöma loco.

GERMANY:  March 2020
Franfurt am Main, U5 subway line
(Gauge: 900mm)
This project had ben initiated from 2013. It will be a 2.7-kilometer route with four stations planned. The budget is approx 373 million. The main construction work (shell construction of the underground section, including tunnel construction and the Güterplatz station) started at the beginning of 2017. The tunnel boring machine was delivered in spring 2019 and started its journey through the Frankfurt underground in late summer.
It was after this that a 900mm gauge railway was built to assist with contruction. This has been in use since approx October last year. Three ex Stuttgart Schöma 900mm diesel locomotives have been removing the overburden with Dresden built wagons. After assisting with the removal of waste, the railway has been transporting the concrete tunnel segments underground.

A delay due to a problem with the Tunnel Boring Machine has put back the completion date for the tunnel construction, and so the narrow gauge railway will see longer use than originally planned.

With thanks to Stadtbahn Europaviertel Projektbaugesellschaft GmbH for the above photo.
