Cherry Orchard Lane Brickworks

Some photos of the Butterley Building Materials railway at Cherry Orchard Lane. This was the last loco worked brickworks railway operating in England.

The first 5 photos were taken by Stu List and John Wright in 1987, here picturing the Alan Keef loco returning with a short loaded train.

Although the two brickworks in Southend were worked mainly by Motor Rails and Alan Keef locos in the last several years, Ruston 30DL No.283513 (identified by Dave Hall), also saw occasional use. Here seen crossing the road immediately before entering the works.

Another shot of the Ruston loco, not far from the clay pit.

One of the Alan Keef locos about to negotiate the tight corner from the pit.

A similar picture a little further round.

The rails crossed the car park to access the tipping shed at the works.

Date: August 1994

For part of it's length the railway paralleled a small country lane on the way to the pit.

In August 1991 one of two operational Motor Rails wait for the next skips to be emptied.

In August 1994 Alan Keef No.26 at the clay pit.

Date: August 1994

Four locos all out of use by 1994 are visible in this photo, with both MRs out of use, plus 40SD530, and Alan Keef No.28 on the hard standing off the tracks.
