Star Lane Brickworks

This was one of the last railways to serve a brickworks in England. The line closed in October 1991. A similar line owned by the same company, a few miles away, finally closed a couple of years later.

Alan Keef No.26 takes a break from track maintenance duties with the JCB usually used to load the trains. Locos were sometimes swapped between the 2 Butterley Brickworks sites.

The line was only about half a mile in length, and ran along side agricultural land towards the weathering stock.

In August 1991 when all these photos were taken, AK 40SD530 is about to leave the weathering stock with a full train. The loaded skips were pushed back to the brickworks.

The skips here were only a few years old. They were purchased from Hudsons in about 1987.

when the line entered the brickworks, it made a tight 90% turn across a dirt road and into the tipping shed.

Date: August 1991

A photo taken from the same position in 1994, shows the dereliction which has set in. The rails were still in situ, but well hidden under sand and grass. The tipping shed was still standing, but in poor condition.
