Torfwerk Steinfeld

Torfwerk Steinfeld is owned and operated by the company Torf und Humuswerk Gnarrenburg, previously Friedrich Meiners. This firm own 40 narrow gauge locomotives and 500 wagons to manage six peat railways in this area of Germany.

A small country road leads off the main road out of Steinfeld, and by the side of the public road there is a tippling facility for the peat works. The peat is transhipped via an elevator discharging directly into waiting transport for processing elsewhere.

The usual loco for line work here is an old Schöma loco dating back to 1958. The plant number within the company is No.43.

The articulated lorries draw up alongside the loading facility and the loaded wagons are pulled through the tippler to load each lorry.

At the terminus, the tracks split over each side of the road and divide into a run round loop on either side. The frequent proximity to public roads adds to the appeal of these country railways.

Emerging from the forest, the train of empties moves into a run round loop on the edge of the moors to exchange wagons with another loco.

A Diema loco (No.44 5187/1991), one of the youngest in the fleet, was employed on a track maintenance.

A further operational loco was No.10, a further Diema, found in the loco shed. A total of 5 working locos were found, however the moors were not fully explored and there could have been further locos not seen.

Heading back to the moors with a train of empties, No.43 makes a clasic picture of the German Torfbahnen running alongside the road.
