SUMMARY:

The Murtalbahn must be one of the more scenic but less visited of the Austrian narrow gauge systems. Maybe the only line that still typifies the 'common carrier' lines of yesteryear, still transporting freight in narrow gauge wagons.

The large BoBo diesels purchased in the 1960s take on daily freight duties comprising mostly of timber but the video captures the Krauss U11 steam loco also on freight services after a diesel failure.

Passenger services are captured using the railcars and also with the twice weekly tourist trains using steam power. The 11km preserved section of the Murtalbahn, the Taurachbahn is also captured to complete the picture of this 76km line. The video was taken in 2003.

Stills from the video are available below.

VL12 near Turrach with a loaded timber train for Unzmarkt.

The Krauss U11 departs Stadl with an early morning frieght for Ramingstein.

Several hours later it is seen heading back to Unzmarkt with a loaded train.

One of the railways 4 railcars seen near the end of its journey to Unzmarkt.

VL6 is an O&K loco and in 2003 was the yard shunter a Unzmarkt.

On the Taurachbahn, the preserved part of the Murtalbahn, Krauss No.298.56 is seen crossing a minor road on the way to Mauterndorf.

VL13 emerges from one of the three short tunnels on the line on the way to Ramingstein with empty timber wagons.

Further along the valley the train is now a couple of kilometers from its destination.

U11 was also on the tourist trains in the week that the cameras were on the line. Here nearing St. Lorenzen on the afternoon trip to Tamsweg.

The timber is transferred to the standard gauge by a grab mounted on a narrow gauge wagon at Unzmarkt.
