Kamig Kaolin

This unique railway was famous for uts roadside alignment and for it's operation of a small fireless loco to transport the kaolin to a standard gauge transhipment point.

Bernard took these photos on the 23rd February 1981, which was about 9 months before the fireless loco ceased work and the line closed. This photo shows the fireless loco shunting at the loop next to the kaolin works. The works also had smaller diesel locos as well, but the fireless was used for the main line work.

At the kaolin works the small 4 wheel wagons were filled from roadside loading bins. A small 2 road loco shed was located just behind the buildings on the left. As steam was already generated by the works, the provision of a small fireless loco was considered a cost effective option and so this small 13t loco was built for the line in 1930 by Florisdorf (Flor 3012).

The route of the line was approx 3.8km, and ran alongside the road for the whole length.

The line travelled north to south through the town of Schwertberg to reach the standard gauge interchange yard where the wagon bodies would be lifted by a gantry crane for tipping.

This picturesque line closed a few months later in 1981 and the fireless loco can now be seen in the museum at Gross Schwechat.
