Beregovo to Irshava

The current operating route represents only a small proportion of a once larger network of 106km. The remaining railway resembles a 'Y', with passenger traffic from Vinogradiv to Irshava, and special excursions still continuing from the junction at Hmelnik to Beregovo.
There used to be heavy freight traffic including limestone, which required up to 4 freight trains per day, but freight is no longer carried.

With just 2 of the 3 TU2 locos in working order it must be a challenge to maintain the scehduled services.

Arriving at Vinogradiv (to the frustration of the local market traders!).

Fortunately the market here is only twice a week on Thursday and Sunday.

The TU2 locos have worked here since 1970. Several new TU7A locos were allocated here in the early 1990s but they never found favour with the crews, and were little used.

Although travelling through a rural setting for most of it's length, there is still evidence of the loading areas for the past limestone traffic that finished in 1998.

The Orthodox Church at Irshava creates an interesting photographic backdrop.

Hmelnik is the junction station, and here the trains can meet from the separate routes to Irshava and Vinogradiv.

The railway serves many rural communities often with little other means of transport yet.
