It is surprising with the profusion of secondary and narrow gauge railway systems in the past, that France does not possess more in the way of narrow gauge railways currently. Interest in their industrial railway heritage was slow to take off, but is on the increase now.
In recent years several systems have been discovered still to be working but even these are disappearing, such as the Briqueteries du Nord sites.
